Argus’ pre-eminence in coal market reporting and indexation means that our coal prices, particularly the API 4 fob Richards Bay - South Africa, published in partnership with McCloskey, are widely used for trading African coal.

The API 4 index is the benchmark price reference for coal exported out of South Africa’s Richards Bay terminal and is used in physical and over-the-counter (OTC) contracts. It is calculated as an average of the Argus fob Richards Bay assessment and the IHS McCloskey FOB Richards Bay marker.

The API 2 index is the benchmark price reference for coal imported into northwest Europe. It is calculated as an average of the Argus cif ARA assessment and the IHS McCloskey NW Europe Steam Coal marker.
