Preconference Workshop- Freight Rates: Argus freight rates are central to Argus delivered prices, which are taking a larger and more prominent role in the evolving physical crude oil and refined products markets. Where physical and financial markets diverge on price, it is often a function of transport, with opaque and poorly understood global tanker and freight costs partly to blame. Supply chains are shifting, and more crude oil and refined product is moving over longer distances on the water, often as part of arbitrage plays that defy historical trade patterns. When market participants look at wellhead costs, terminal pricing and delivered pricing, do they understand the freight component? When an arbitrage opens or closes, what role do tanker costs and freight rates play? Argus freight rate workshop participants will learn:
  • How and when global tanker rates do, and do not, correlate with global oil and refined products trade
  • The challenges and opportunities US exporters face in accessing and leveraging global tanker fleets
  • How delivered prices for US exports include tanker rates, and what market participants can do to reduce or manage tanker rate exposure
  • The factors in evaluating freight rate outlooks and in analyzing historical pricing
  • How indexing using Argus freight rates works, and why it can be useful for US exporters of crude oil and refined products
