Longer-term planning remains critical to the continued good health of the global petrochemical industry. The Argus Benzene Annual is a valuable tool to better assist in those efforts.
The Argus global team of industry experts present forecasts of capacity, supply and demand out to 2020, consolidated on a regional and global basis. Also within the annual are what are believed to be the most probable scenarios delivered from this information and analysis. This information is provided in user-friendly excel spreadsheets.
In 2014, global benzene prices moved higher and reached a record contract price. For many producers, benzene, not paraxylene, became the strategic product, and they modified operations to maximize benzene output.
That incremental benzene supply, combined with a sharp decrease in crude oil and naphtha prices, drove benzene contract prices lower for seven consecutive months, finally bottoming out at 201c/USG ($601.59/t) in January 2015. Supplies of extraction feeds from ethylene production and oil refineries continue to decline. More ethylene crackers in Europe and Asia are modifying their units to process more low-cost LPG in lieu of naphtha.
