The Netherlands this week adopted the revised European Renewable Energy Directive (RED) II in its Senate, implementing it in Dutch law.
The amendment to the Environmental Management Act — the law in which RED II is anchored — was adopted on 25 May in the Dutch House of Representatives and on 29 June in the Senate. The Dutch Emissions Authority will be able to implement the new legislation from 1 January 2022.
RED II requires fuel suppliers to reach a 14pc renewables target in the transport sector by 2030. The Netherlands' Energy Transport Decree will lay out the annual targets. The most recent decree — from May 2018 — required 17.5pc in 2021, of which a 5pc maximum could be met by conventional renewable fuel units (HBE-Cs), with a minimum of 1.2pc to be met by advanced renewable fuel units (HBE-Gs).
Germany passed the recast RED II in May.
