Dubai, 2 December (Argus) — Almost 120 countries have signed on to triple the world's current renewable energy generation capacity by 2030 and collectively double global energy efficiency by the same date, Cop 28 President Sultan al-Jaber announced on Saturday.

Speaking on the sidelines of the UN climate summit in Dubai, al-Jaber said this pledge, which was first endorsed by G20 leaders in September, “aligns” with keeping the goals of the Paris Agreement. The climate accord sets a goal to limit global warming to "well below 2°C" above pre-industrial averages, and preferably to 1.5°C. Delivering on renewables and energy efficiency is a key goal for the presidency.

“This is why the Cop 28 presidency is asking all parties to sign the global pledge to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030,” al-Jaber said. A total of 117 signatories endorsed the pledge at first, and Mexico joined shortly after the announcement. Around 200 countries and jurisdictions have ratified the Paris agreement.

The Cop 28 presidency said tripling global renewable energy generation would lift capacity to “at least 11,000 GW by 2030, taking into consideration different starting points and national circumstances.” On doubling energy efficiency, it said the countries had pledged to “collectively double the global average annual rate of energy efficiency improvements from around 2pc to more than 4pc every year until 2030.”
