Houston, 19 December (Argus) — More US holiday travelers at the end of December will fly to their destinations this year, but automobiles remain the prime method of transportation during the Christmas and New Year's season.
An estimated 5.6mn US holiday travelers will take to the skies between 22 December and 1 January, a 4.5pc increase over the same period of 2011, according to the auto club AAA. The average lowest round-trip flight was $203, down 3pc since last year, the group said.
But most travelers – 84.4mn, or 90pc of the 93.3mn expected to travel during the holidays — will drive to destinations at least 50 miles away. Round trips during the Christmas and New Year's season will average 760 miles this year, up from 726 miles in 2011, according to the group. Travel spending is also expected to get a 6pc boost to $759, the service said.
