Drax is set to be one of the first power stations in the world to be fitted with BECCS – bioenergy with carbon capture and storage. BECCS is the most scalable negative emissions technology available today to remove Co2 from the atmosphere.

Key facts

Drax Power Station provides 11% of the UK’s renewable power, providing a secure, reliable and flexible source of renewable energy to support more intermittent renewables, such as wind and solar.
The site near Selby in North Yorkshire provides the most renewable power of any single location in the UK, some 14 terawatt-hours (TWh) or enough electricity to power the equivalent of five million homes.
The use of biomass pellets reduces carbon emissions by 80% compared to coal.
The station includes 4 x 645MW biomass fired units and produces around 14 terawatt-hours (TWh).
Drax Power Station is vital to the regional economy with more than 700 people employed at the plant throughout the year and it supports over 4,200 jobs in Yorkshire and the Humber area.
