US crude inventories declined by a record 17mn bl last week as exports increased, according to Energy Information Administration (EIA) data.
The unprecedented drawdown reduced total US crude stocks in the week ended 28 July to 439.8mn bl, the lowest since January, data from the agency showed. The drop was led by the Gulf coast, where inventories fell by a record 15.6mn bl.
Stocks at the Cushing storage hub in Oklahoma fell during the week by 1.2mn bl to 34.5mn bl.
Crude inventories at the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) were unchanged at 346.8mn bl. SPR stocks are not included in the overall EIA commercial crude inventory figures.
The White House is delaying plans to buy back a further 6mn bl for the SPR after oil prices rallied above $80/bl in recent weeks. The agency previously set out plans to partially refill the reserve, which has fallen to a four-decade low following drawdowns last year designed to blunt the impact of higher energy prices due to the war in Ukraine.
US crude imports last week rose by 301,000 b/d from the prior week to 6.7mn b/d, while exports increased by 692,000 b/d to 5.28mn b/d.
Domestic crude output was unchanged at 12.2mn b/d in the latest week.
Shale activity has slowed this year due to lower oil and gas prices, which have sent the US rig count tumbling to the lowest level since March 2022. Lower profits have prompted some producers to reduce spending plans as they focus on funneling returns to investors.
US refiners processed about 16.5mn b/d of crude last week, up by 40,000 b/d from the prior week. Refinery utilization rates on average declined to 92.7pc from 93.4pc a week earlier.
Gasoline inventories last week increased by 1.5mn bl to 219.1mn bl and were about 6pc below the five-year average for this time of year.
