French nuclear output has reached the yearly generation estimate set by French utility EdF, as nuclear availability has risen on the year.
Output totalled 310.5TWh on 1 January-25 December, already exceeding the lower end of the 300-330TWh target range set by EdF. And if EdF maintains the same generation rate as last week — an average of 42.4GW, or around 1 TWh/d — it could reach a total output for the year of just above 316TWh.
Nuclear unavailability for week 52 is scheduled to average 16.8GW, up from 15.3GW last week. The 1.3GW Nogent 1 nuclear plant is due to start ramping up ahead of its return to the grid on the evening of 28 December, having been shut down since the end of September.
Nuclear outage extensions this year have been reduced by a third compared with 2022, according to EdF, owing to the implementation of the START 2025 programme, aimed at improving efficiency in its nuclear fleet maintenance. But a series of strikes against pensions reform, mainly in January-April, limited nuclear availability, and transmission system operator RTE had flagged industrial action as a "point of vigilance" for French energy supply security this year.
In comparison, the French nuclear fleet delivered 272.2TWh on 1 January–25 December last year, while EdF's output estimate stood at 275-285TWh for the year. This came after signs of stress corrosion were discovered on several reactors and resulted in outages extensions and repairs.
Looking ahead, the nuclear generation estimate for next year stands at 315-345TWh, and EdF last week announced a target of 335-365TWh for both 2025 and 2026.
EdF is planning to load fuel into the 1.65GW Flamanville 3 European pressurised reactor by March, with the reactor starting up mid-2024 and being expected to deliver around 14TWh between its connection to the grid and its next outage. But the utility also said one out of three outages at 13 reactors could be extended by an average of 30 days during 2024, following key learnings from controls and repairs at reactors affected by stress corrosion this year.
