Japanese chemicals producer Sumitomo Chemical has acquired Turkish plastics firm Emas Plastik as part of a strategy to expand its polypropylene (PP) compound production and sales operations and tap growing demand, particularly from the automobile industry.
Sumitomo Chemical said its UK-based engineering compound subsidiary Sumika Polymer Compounds Europe has acquired the Turkish PP compound producer and key seller of recycled PP compounds for an undisclosed sum. The Emas group has three production and marketing bases of PP and other plastic compounds in Turkey, a production and export base of the products for Europe's car and electric appliance manufacturers.
The buyout is expected to enhance Sumitomo Chemical's global network of PP compound production and sales, particularly to meet rising demand in Europe for such products made from recycled materials. It adds to the firm's 13 existing global production and marketing bases, including two in Europe in the UK and France.
Sumitomo Chemical's global PP compound output capacity prior to the Emas buyout was around 260,000 t/yr. Sumika Polymer Compounds is owned 55.1pc by Sumitomo Chemical, 25pc by Japanese printing ink manufacturer Toyo Ink and 19.9pc by Japanese trading house Itochu.
Japanese rival firm Mitsui Chemical is also expanding its global PP compound output to meet increasing demand from the automobile industry.
