The large fire that broke out at global metals recycler Sims Metal Management's dock site in Avonmouth, southwest England, has been fully extinguished and will not impact any customer orders, the company said today.
The fire in the 20,000t pile of scrap metal at the dock was put out on Wednesday after burning since Sunday night.
Sims said in statement that no injuries occurred on site as a result of the fire, while a company spokesperson told Argus that normal operations are expected to resume in the next few days. The fire had no impact on Sims' current or future customer orders.
UK ferrous scrap market participants also told Argus over the past three days that the fire was unlikely to significantly disrupt Sims' export operations, despite Avonmouth being the company's largest UK terminal in terms of volume for deep-sea bulk shipments.
The company has the capability to ship deep-sea bulk cargoes out of docks at Belfast in Northern Ireland, Sheerness in southeast England and Hull in northeast England, which means it would be able to maintain its export shipments even if Avonmouth were out of action for any period of time.
Market participants also noted that scrap at Avonmouth that was affected by the fire may still be viable for sale, depending on its condition once the clean-up operation is complete.
