Arizona-based wastehauler Republic Services today opened a polymer reprocessing plant in Las Vegas, Nevada, as part of the company's first foray into downstream recycled plastics for consumer packaging.
With an expected capacity of 100mn lb/yr, the facility will process used PET into recycled PET (rPET) flake and color-sort HDPE and PP bales.
Coca-Cola has signed an offtake agreement with Republic Services, and will use Republic Service's rPET to help meet its sustainability goal of 50pc recycled material in its packaging by 2030. US demand for rPET in the US is expected to reach 5bn lb by 2030, more than double projected supply, the company said, citing a report from consultancy group McKinsey.
The plant is opening during a year that has been difficult for recyclers and reprocessors, as weakened demand for polymers has narrowed their margins.
Republic Services plans to open a similar polymer recycling center in Indianapolis next year.
In July, Republic Services and Ravago announced a partnership to create consumer-grade packaging with material from Republic's reprocessing plants.
