Houston, 4 December (Argus) — LSB Industries, parent company of El Dorado Chemical, confirmed it restarted operations at its sulfuric acid plant in El Dorado, Arkansas, and will build a new nitric acid unit to replace the one damaged beyond repair in a May explosion.
The sulfur-based sulfuric acid plant, with a capacity of 115,000st/yr (104,327t/yr), has been down since a 15 May explosion caused by a sulfur fire. In its third quarter earnings release, the company indicated that as a result of the downtime, it purchased spot sulfuric acid in the merchant market to cover its contractual commitments. The purchase and resale of the spot volume resulted in a negative profit margin. LSB estimates the combined impact to profits resulting from lost sales, lost profits and extra expenses in the third quarter was at least $9mn.
Separately, the company has signed an agreement with Weatherly for a new nitric acid plant expected to be operational by mid-2015. Weatherly will oversee the licensing, engineering and procurement of major manufacturing equipment for the 1,100st/day, 65pc strength plant. This will replace the direct strength nitric (DSN) plant damaged in the May event. LSB is also negotiating a contract for the purchase of a concentrator plant to work in conjunction with the new nitric acid plant that will further concentrate a portion of the output up to 98.5pc strength. Costs are estimated at $120mn, with a significant portion expected to be paid from insurance proceeds.
The El Dorado plant is the company's largest with a capacity of 470,000t/yr of nitrogen-based products including urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) and ammonium nitrate (AN). LSB's markets its chemical products to the agricultural, mining and industrial markets as well as manufacturing and selling commercial and residential climate control products.
