Dutch utility Eneco has abandoned the construction of a gas-fired project in Belgium, its representatives have told Argus.
The plant, with a planned capacity of 870MW, would have been located in Manage, in the south of the country, and was at the permitting stage. "The plant is no longer part of our strategy to be CO2 neutral by 2035 and we are looking for other forms of sustainable flexibility," Eneco told Argus.
Belgium had around 7GW of installed gas-fired capacity at the beginning of this year, according to transparency platform Entso-E. And under its capacity remuneration mechanism (CRM), which aims to ensure security of supply to compensate for the closure of nuclear plants, transmission system operator Elia has opened tenders for new generation capacity, demand management and storage. The 870MW Seraing and 875MW Les Awirs plants — both part of the CRM — should be ready by the end of 2025.
Gas-fired generation has averaged 1.8GW this year, representing around 20pc of the power mix.
