US steelmaker Nucor has begun repairs on a damaged electric arc furnace (EAF) at its Longview, Texas, plate mill after a minor fire on 30 July.
Nucor said the other EAF at the facility has resumed operations. The producer is discussing potential service or delivery disruptions resulting from the fire, but expects the impact to be "minimal."
Nucor said its plate group will be able to meet customer needs.
The east Texas mill has two 25-ton EAFs, a ladle metallurgy station, a four-high reversing rolling mill and heat-treating equipment. It is capable of producing 180,000 st/yr of carbon and alloy plate products, including thick, extra-thick and aircraft-quality plate.
Nucor bought the mill in 2016 from Joy Global for $29mn to complement its existing plate mills in North Carolina and Alabama, which have a combined capacity of 2.9mn st/yr.
