German utility RWE partnered with South Korea's Lotte Chemical and Japan's Mitsubishi to jointly study the development of a plant to integrate green and blue ammonia production in the port of Corpus Christi, Texas.
The parties envision the project will come online by 2030 and produce up to 10mn metric tonnes (t)/yr of ammonia in its final stage, for which the companies are eyeing export to Asia and Europe, RWE said. The companies are in discussions with the Port of Corpus Christi Authority for the land required for the project. The facility would leverage common infrastructure to enable exports, RWE said.
The port is notably home to 110 miles of existing hydrogen pipelines.
The joint study is tacked on to a larger agreement between the parties to jointly develop blue and green ammonia supply chains in Asia, Europe and the US.
The port of Corpus Christi, on the US Gulf coast, is also a candidate to host one of the US Department of Energy's (DOE) clean hydrogen hubs. A coalition of around 30 companies submitted an initial proposal last fall, and was subsequently encouraged by DOE to send a full application in a bid for up to $1bn in federal funding.
