Japanese petrochemical producer Asahi Kasei has a started on a demonstration trial of chemical recycling of polyamide in April, aiming to examine the feasibility of the project by the April 2025-March 2026 fiscal year.
Asahi Kasei announced on 27 April that it has started joint demonstration in April of the chemical recycling by using unused and waste polyamide with domestic venture Microwave Chemical. They will build small-scale demonstration equipment within 2023-24 at Microwave Chemical's Osaka plant and start test runs by 2024-25.
The partners aim to directly obtain raw monomers hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid from polyamide like auto components. They target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared with conventional polyamide production process involving petroleum feedstock use.
Japan's petrochemical companies have attempted to achieve decarbonization through chemical recycling. Sumitomo Chemical plans to begin recycling of polymethyl methacrylate or acrylic glass by 2025. Some companies have co-operated with foreign ventures to accelerate recycling businesses, such as Mitsubishi Chemical signing a licensing agreement with UK-based Mura Technology.
