Australian independent Woodside Energy has signed a deal to supply Western Australian (WA) lithium producer Pilbara Minerals with LNG in a five-year sales agreement.
LNG totalling 3.4 TJ/d (61 t/d) will be supplied from the truck loading facility at Woodside's 4.9mn t/yr Pluto LNG in WA's Pilbara region from October-December 2024, Woodside said on 21 December.
The LNG will be used at the Pilgangoora lithium project, 300km east of Karratha, to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by replacing diesel as a source of electricity generation. Pilbara Minerals has unveiled a medium-term strategy to reduce power-related emissions intensity by up to 80pc by 2030 compared with the 2022-23 fiscal year. The Pilgangoora mine has set a higher production guidance for 2023-24 after increasing production by 64pc from a year earlier in 2022-23.
Following the move from diesel to LNG, Pilbara will increase solar power generation on-site and eventually source more electricity from grid-supplied wind power, if it becomes available. The firm intends to become a net zero scope 1 and 2 emissions producer by the 2040s.
"Successful delivery of the strategy is anticipated to achieve about a 48pc reduction in power emissions intensity by 2027 via our own natural gas and solar power generation initiatives at site and up to 80pc reduction by 2030 should emerging wind power generation opportunities become regionally available," Pilbara Minerals chief executive Dale Henderson said on 21 December.
Australia's mining firms are among more than 200 entities that must reduce emissions by 4.9pc/yr until 2030 under the federal government's GHG reduction policy known as the safeguard mechanism.
