US southbound barge demand falls off earlier than usual

Southbound barge rates in the US have fallen on unseasonably low demand because of increased competition in the international grain market.

Rates for voyages down river have deteriorated to "unsustainable" levels, said American Commercial Barge Line. Southbound rates declined in April to an average tariff of 284pc across all rivers this April, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), which is below breakeven levels for many barge carriers. Rates typically do not fall below a 300pc tariff until May or June.

Southbound freight values for May are expected to hold steady or move lower, said sources this week. Southbound activity has increased recently because of the low rates, but not enough to push prices up.

The US has already sold 84pc of its forecast corn exports and 89pc of forecast soybean exports with only five months left until the end of the corn and soybean marketing year, according to the USDA. US corn and soybean prices have come down since the beginning of the year in order to stay competitive with other origins. The USDA lowered its forecast for US soybean exports by 545,000t in its April report as soybeans from Brazil and Argentina were more competitively priced.

US farmers are holding onto more of their harvest from last year because of low crop prices, curbing exports.

Prompt CBOT corn futures averaged $435/bushel in April, down 34pc from April 2023.

Weak southbound demand could last until fall when the US enters harvest season and exports ramp up southbound barge demand. Major agriculture-producing countries such as Argentina and Brazil are expected to export their grain harvest before the US. Brazil has finished planting corn on time.

Carriers are tying up barges earlier than usual to avoid losses on southbound barge voyages. Carriers that have already parked their barges will take their time re-entering the market unless tariffs become profitable again.

The carriers who remain on the river will gain more southbound market share and possibly more northbound spot interest.

Shanghai, 17 July (Argus) — Australian resources firm BHP has set a lower coking coal production target for the 2024-2025 financial year that started on 1 July, after its divestment of the Blackwater and Daunia mines. The BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), which is 50pc owned by BHP and 50pc owned by Mitsubishi, has set lower production targets of 33mn-38mn t for 2024-25. The targets are reflective of the sale of its Blackwater and Daunia mines to Australian producer Whitehaven Coal that was completed on 2 April, and the impact of elevated strip ratios. The two mines together contributed 10mn t on a 100pc basis to the 2023-24 production before their divestment, the company said on 17 July. BMA met its production guidance of 43mn-45mn t by producing 44.6mn t of coal in the 2023-24 financial year to 30 June. Production fell by 22pc from a year earlier, because of an extended longwall move and geotechnical issues at Broadmeadow in the first half of the fiscal year, the disruption at its 10mn t/yr Saraji mine in Queensland , as well as increased waste removal and stockpile rebuilding after the disruption caused by wet weather and labour shortages in 2023. BHP received an average price of $271.26/t for hard coking coal and $206.84/t for weak coking coal in January-June, compared to an average of $276.22/t and $250.38/t in January-June 2023. It defines hard coking coal as those with a coke strength after reaction (CSR) of 35 and above and weak coking coal as those with a CSR of below 35. BHP expects to be in the lower half of its cost guidance for the 2024 fiscal year. Expectations of lower production volumes led BHP to increase its cost guidance for the 2024 fiscal year to $119-125/t in April from $110-116/t in January and from $95-105/t in June 2023. The firm is expecting production to increase to 43mn-45mn t/yr in the next five years, once stockpile rebuilding reaches a sustainable level and strip ratios normalise. Amsterdam, 17 July (Argus) — Egyptian fertilizer suppliers Kima and Helwan have restarted granular urea output, following shutdowns on 16 July. Helwan brought its 650,000 t/yr granular urea plant back on line during the evening of 16 July. It is now running at 80pc and expects product to be available from 18 July. Kima restarted its 570,000 t/yr granular urea plant earlier today and is running at around 75pc of capacity. Both producers had been running at 80pc of capacity from 2 July to 16 July. There has been no update regarding Abu Qir's prilled urea plant, which also went off line on 16 July . Most of the country's remaining urea plants have been operating at 80pc. Mopco is running only two of its three granular urea plants at 80pc, while EFC's production status has yet to be confirmed. Urea export offers had started at $380-390/t fob Egypt earlier in the week, but fresh liquidity emerged yesterday , with NCIC selling 5,000t lots at $362-367/t fob for loading at the end of this month. A gas supply crunch in Egypt has hampered urea production since 20 May, as the country prioritised gas deliveries to power plants to meet summer cooling demand. But LNG imports eased the balance at the beginning of July. Egypt fixed at least 17 LNG cargoes in a 25 June tender — seven for July, six for August and four for September. Canpotex, Coromandel settle new Indian MOP contract

London, 17 July (Argus) — Canadian potash distributor Canpotex and Indian fertilizer importer Coromandel International (CIL) have settled a new Indian standard MOP contract price at $283/t cfr with 180 days of credit for deliveries until 31 December 2024. Volumes are undisclosed but CIL imported around 416,000t of MOP during the 2023-24 fertilizer year, according to Argus data. Imports under the new contract will likely be around this figure. The contract price is $4/t higher than the contract price signed last week by India's IPL at $279/t cfr with 180 days' credit and $36/t below last year's headline price of $319/t cfr with 180 days' credit. Canpotex and CIL's contract price is also $10/t higher than the contract price settled in China last week at $273/t cfr between Russia's Uralkali and the Chinese buying consortium. This latest contract price is broadly in line with standard MOP prices in southeast Asia, which Argus currently assesses at $275-305/t cfr. Japanese firms start truck-to-ship ammonia bunkering

Osaka, 17 July (Argus) — A Japanese cross-industry group has started trial supplies of fuel ammonia to a tugboat from a tanker truck, ahead of an official commissioning scheduled for late August. The group comprises shipping firm NYK Line and its subsidiary Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha, power producer Jera and ammonia producer Resonac. The companies have jointly studied the possible setting up ammonia bunkering for tugboats since December 2023. Jera supplied the marine ammonia to NYK on 17 July to fuel the NYK-owned tugboat A-Tug at Yokohama port. The ammonia was transported by a tanker truck and fuelled by truck-to-ship operations, which the group said is the world's first attempt. A-Tug is expected to begin normal operations in late August, behind an initial target of June because of technical delays. Jera after the commissioning will supply the marine ammonia to Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha, which will be in charge of operating the tugboat at Yokoyama and Kawasaki ports in Tokyo bay. Jera is buying from Resonac an unspecified volume of low-carbon ammonia, which is partly derived from waste plastics. Ammonia consumption of the tugboat was undisclosed. BHP posts higher nickel output after disruptions

Singapore, 17 July (Argus) — Australian resources group BHP lifted its nickel production during April-June as it recovered from planned maintenance and wet weather disruptions in the previous quarter. BHP's refined nickel production for April-June rose by 22pc against the previous quarter and by 4.5pc from a year earlier to 23,000t. The increased output was a result of a low base in the previous quarter with planned maintenance at the Kwinana refinery in Western Australia (WA) and poor weather conditions in March, the firm said. Total refined nickel output for the 2023-24 fiscal ending 30 June was 81,600t, up by 2pc from the same period last year. BHP on 11 July announced that it will temporarily suspend operations at its WA nickel businesses from October, on the back of nickel oversupply and an anticipated nickel price downtrend. BHP has also decided to halt operations at its Kambalda concentrator earlier in February, placing it into a care and maintenance phase from June. Mining and processing operations at the Kwinana refinery, Kalgoorlie smelter and Mount Keith and Leinster mines will be suspended, while development of the West Musgrave project will be put on hold. BHP will implement a care and maintenance programme to ensure the safety and integrity of its mines and infrastructure. It will invest around $300mn/yr following the transition period to support a potential restart of the facility. The transition period will start from July, with operations to be halted in October and completely stopped by December. BHP intends to review the closure by February 2027. BHP expects to record negative earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation of around $300mn for 2023-24 and sustain a further $300mn pre-tax non-cash impairment charge following the temporary suspension decision.
