  • 06/08/24

Indian urea sales rose to 4.65mn t last month and monsoon rains have accelerated, supporting domestic consumption, with inventories pressured lower.

Indian domestic urea sales rose to 4.65mn t in July from 4.53mn t in the same month last year, the latest provisional data show. Production was also higher, rising to 2.65mn t from 2.48mn t in July last year.

The rise in domestic consumption resulted in a further drop in countrywide stocks, to 8.7mn t at the end of the month. Inventories had stood at around 10mn t in mid July, down from 11mn t at the end of June and 11.3mn t at the end of May.

Domestic urea demand is expected to remain supported in August, with monsoon rains accelerating to 533.3mm by 6 August since the start of June, up by 6.6pc on the long-term average. The country's meteorological department forecast last week that rainfall for the remainder of the monsoon season in August-September will be "above normal", or higher than 106pc of the long-term mean.

Chile 1H24 sulacid imports fall to three-year low

Chile 1H24 sulacid imports fall to three-year low

London, 6 August (Argus) — Chile's imports of sulphuric acid totalled 1.62mn t in January-June, down by 14pc on the year, representing the lowest level for the past three years, GTT data show. The decline reflects logistic and discharge issues at the key Mejillones port, which suffered the worst heavy swell period since records began, and a lack of fresh demand towards the end of the third quarter. This season's heavy swells period started in early December last year, a month earlier than expected, and lasted until the end of April this year. This resulted in a bulging import line-up and demurrage costs for endusers, which dissuaded them from entering the spot market. Peru shipped 539,000t in January-June, down by 21pc on the year, as logistical issues stemming from congestion at Mejillones and some unplanned output issues affected overall shipments to date. Imports from Asian countries recovered sharply from last year's drop in shipments, reflecting already-contracted cargoes covering annual commitments in Chile. China's shipments to Chile jumped 151pc on the year, with 492,000t shipped in January-June. South Korea's exports rose by 8pc to 247,000t during the period, while Japan-origin acid imports totalled 205,000t in January-June, up by 41pc on the year. The decline in shipments was most notable in June, with imports dropping 30pc on the month to 168,000t — the lowest monthly value since January 2021 due to ample inventories at the port and a lack of fresh import demand. Chilean buyers refused to enter the spot market owing to market length and rising Chinese fobs prices, which gained nearly 50pc during June as OCP entered the Asian market to secure acid cargoes for third quarter delivery. Hurricane Debby halts traffic at southeast US ports

Houston, 5 August (Argus) — Major ports in the southeast US are closed to vessel traffic as Hurricane Debby made landfall today as a category 1 storm in northern Florida. Seaport Manatee and the port of Tampa Bay in Florida closed waterways on 3 August, with Seaport Manatee issuing port condition Zulu — where gale force winds are anticipated within 12 hours and port operations are suspended. Port Tampa Bay closed its shipping lanes on 3 August. Combined DAP and MAP exports from the port of Tampa reached 245,000 metric tonnes (t) between January and May — comprising nearly 91pc of year-to-date offshore export volumes — according to US Census Bureau data. Nearly two-thirds of US ammonium phosphate production capacity is consolidated in central Florida with Mosaic, according to The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) data. The Port of Savannah, in Georgia, will close today at 3:00pm ET and will remain closed on Tuesday before reopening on Wednesday, according to the Georgia Ports Authority. No vessel activity will be allowed during the closure. By Meghan Yoyotte Send comments and request more information at feedback@argusmedia.com Copyright © 2024. Argus Media group . Advansix expects higher amsul prices yoy in Q3

Houston, 2 August (Argus) — US chemical producer AdvanSix expects ammonium sulfate prices to increase year over year in the third quarter on thin supply, but bearish agricultural fundamentals present a challenge for fertilizer demand. AdvanSix started the third quarter with a "robust" summer fill program for amsul at higher price levels compared to a year earlier. Amsul summer fill values for the Corn Belt released by the company in early July were about $55/st higher year over year. AdvanSix will likely benefit from production outages in Texas following the landfall of Hurricane Beryl in July. Major amsul producer IOC in Pasadena shut down in preparation for the hurricane and remains offline. The producer expects sales volumes to decline in the third quarter compared with the second, typical during the summer season. Additionally, weaker grain fundamentals could soften fertilizer demand further in the third quarter for AdvanSix. Ample corn supplies reported by the US Department of Agriculture and falling corn prices in the US could cause farmers to further defer purchases of fertilizer. The supply-to-use corn ratio in the US is currently estimated at 14pc for the 2024-25 agricultural year, above the historical average, according to the USDA. Longer term, AdvanSix expects agricultural demand for sulfur to grow 3-4pc/yr going forward. The company pointed towards growing recognition in the US and globally that the increase in yield from ammonium sulfate makes the fertilizer a worthwhile investment, including for soybean crops. Total sales volumes across all product lines rose by 5pc in the second quarter on tighter supply in North America. Revenue from ammonium sulfate was largely steady at nearly $140mn, moving up by less than 1pc from the same quarter last year. AdvanSix continued its SUSTAIN program in the second quarter, an effort to convert more standard amsul into granular product. Over a third of the company's granular sales in the second quarter were attributed to increased granular conversion. Granular conversion at the plant reached 68pc year-to-date and is expected to reach 70pc by the end of year. Revenue from Nylon sales increased by 11pc to $103mn, while caprolactam sales increased by 8pc to $81mn. Chemical intermediates sales increased by almost 7pc to $129mn. AdvanSix generated $16.7mn in profits during the second quarter compared with $15.7mn a year prior. Pupuk Indonesia outlines CCS blue ammonia plans

Singapore, 2 August (Argus) — State-owned fertilizer producer Pupuk Indonesia plans to achieve low-carbon ammonia production using carbon capture and storage (CCS) by 2030-45, it said at the International and Indonesia CCS Forum in Jakarta on 1 August. Pupuk Indonesia plans to develop seven blue ammonia projects across its various facilities in Aceh, east Kalimantan, south Sumatra and east Java. The company is currently the largest grey ammonia producer in Asia, produced from natural gas without any CCS, with a total production capacity of 7mn t/yr. It will convert its existing grey plants to blue ammonia facilities with the implementation of CCS, targeting a total of 4.3mn t/yr of blue ammonia production by 2045. CCS is a technology capable of capturing carbon emissions from the air and storing them in a storage facility with carbon emissions directed and injected into old oil and gas wells. Pupuk Indonesia plans to use CCS at five potential sites comprising the Arun field, east Kalimantan, Sunda Asri basin, Gundih and Sukowati. The Pupuk group is expecting potential CCS use to gradually increase to 4.3mn t of carbon dioxide (CO2) by 2045, as part of its efforts to decarbonise ammonia and fertilizer products, while expanding into new markets for blue ammonia. Pupuk Indonesia's subsidiary Pupuk Iskandar Muda (PIM) is expected to carry out the first low-carbon ammonia project for the group, by building a new blue ammonia plant with a total production capacity of 825,000 t/yr by 2030. Feasibility studies are currently under way at the Arun field as a potential site for CCS with gas supplies from Andaman Sea blocks. The next implementation would be adding around 396,000 t/yr of blue ammonia capacity to its PIM-2 unit by 2035, bringing PIM's blue ammonia total production to 1.2mn t/yr. Pupuk Indonesia is also planning to add 594,000 t/yr of blue ammonia conversion to another subsidiary Pupuk Kalimantan Timur's Kaltim-2 unit by 2040. The producer has entered into an initial deal with Chevron New Energies International to assess CCS. Pupuk Sriwidjaya's Pusri-2B unit will also be replaced and added with a new blue ammonia plant, achieving 1.32mn t/yr of blue ammonia capacity by 2040-45. This will be followed by further blue ammonia additions to Pupuk's Petrokimia Gresik plant and the remaining units at the east Kalimantan plant. Pupuk's Gresik plant is expected to have around 495,000 t/yr of blue ammonia capacity at the PG-III unit, with Kaltim to have a 660,000 t/yr new blue ammonia plant. Pupuk Indonesia plans to work on the development of green ammonia using renewable feedstock beyond 2025 and to achieve ammonia co-firing in coal-fired power plants , with the help of government support, fiscal incentives, partnerships and acceleration of commercialisation operations at CCS sites. Indonesia has a huge potential to become a CCS hub by tapping its storage capacity in depleted oil and gas reservoirs, with total CCS capacity potentially reaching 4.85bn t of CO2, Pupuk Indonesia said. US Senate approves waterways infrastructure bill

Washington, 1 August (Argus) — The US Senate today unanimously approved a waterways infrastructure bill authorizing river navigation improvements, setting the stage for negotiations later in the year with the US House of Representatives, which has passed its own legislation. This is "crucial bipartisan legislation to invest in our nation's water infrastructure, protect our communities and support good-paying jobs," said senator Tom Carper (D-Delaware), chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. Carper introduced the biennial bill earlier this year. The bill would authorize US Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) projects focused on navigation, flood control and ecosystem restoration. In all, the Senate bill measure would authorize 83 feasibility studies and 13 new and modified projects. The bill regularly draws bipartisan support because its projects and programs impact all 50 states. "By passing this legislation, the Senate took a significant step toward strengthening our water infrastructure, supporting our national economy, better protecting communities from flood risks, and helping the Corps carry out its mission now and in the future," senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-West Virginia). The House approved a companion but somewhat different bill on 22 July. Lawmakers now will have to hammer out difference between the two versions in a conference committee, unless one chamber opts to pass the other house's language. But no action is expected before September at the earlier. The Senate adjourned today for its August recess and is not expected to reconvene until 9 September. The House left town last week. Passage of a final bill could be further complicated by election year politics. By Abby Caplan Send comments and request more information at feedback@argusmedia.com Copyright © 2024.
