UPM Biochemicals, a division of Finnish forestry company UPM, aims to start integrated commercial production at its biorefinery in Leuna, eastern Germany, in the second half of 2025.
The facility was scheduled to start up by the end of 2022, but the schedule has since been updated several times with the latest iteration specifying a sequential production start in the fourth quarter of 2024.
The 220,000 t/yr facility will convert "responsibly-sourced" solid wood into bio-monoethylene glycol (bio-MEG) and renewable functional fillers (RFF), and will produce bio-monopropylene glycol (bio-MPG) and industrial sugars.
The firm began commissioning and start-up operations at the bio-refinery in late 2024 and made good progress in most units, it said. But it identified corrective works were required in the sugar-to-chemicals process, which are expected to take a few months to complete.
UPM Biochemicals has established partnerships in the automotive, fashion and packaging industry in the past two years, including with German antifreeze producer Haertol, specialty polyester resins producer Selenis, and German sustainable outdoor apparel supplier Vaude. In September 2023, UPM said it had selected chemicals distributor Brenntag as sole distributor of its bio-MEG in Europe.
UPM Biochemicals expects the biorefinery to reach full capacity and positive earnings before interest and taxation in 2027. The firm said there was continued demand for bio-MEG and RFF in 2024, driven by strong interest in sustainability from consumers and brand owners.
