Houston, 4 June (Argus) — Western Potash Corp has signed a deal with Chinese investors for financing and offtake of product from its planned solution potash mine in Saskatchewan, Canada.
CBC Canada Holding Corp (CBCHC), a joint venture between China BlueChemical and Benewood Holdings Corp, is investing C$ 31.98mn ($30.90mn) to take a 19.9pc stake in Western. The funds will finance Western's Milestone project in Saskatchewan, which will feature production capacity of 2.8mn t/yr, with 80pc of production being granular grade and the remaining 20pc as standard grade.
China Blue, a subsidiary of China's largest offshore oil and gas producer, China National Offshore Oil Corp, and Benewood, a subsidiary of Guoxin, a Hong Kong-registered financial investment company, have also entered a 20-year off-take agreement with the Vancouver-based start-up. CBCHC will purchase the lesser of 30pc or 1mn t/yr of Milestone's output. The off-take agreement will automatically renew for five-year periods unless either party chooses not to extend it.
While Western has been in discussions with other interested parties, the company hopes to close this deal with CBCHC on or before 14 June.
The deal adds to the series of junior mining companies raising capital from international investors, particularly from countries heavily dependent on importing potash. In January, Karnalyte Resources agreed to a deal with India's Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals (GSFC) for the purchase of 350,000t/yr of potash from its Wynyard, Saskatchewan, mine. Encanto Potash has also been in discussions with India's Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF) to supply 2mn t/yr, though a deal has not been confirmed.
China and India, both large importers of Canadian potash, are already well ahead of their import pace from last year, which was unusually low because of delays in signing new contracts with Canadian suppliers. Canadian exports between January and April totaled more than 680,000t and 197,000t to China and India, respectively, according to trade data. China imported about 1mn t from Canada in 2012 while India imported about 340,000t.
