Australian iron ore mining firm Mineral Resources will ship first ore from its Iron Valley operation in the Pilbara mining region this month, having put its Phil's Creek and Spinifex Ridge mines on care and maintenance.
First ore from the 4mn-6mn t/yr Iron Valley mine was transported to Western Australia's (WA) Port Hedland on 12 October, with Mineral Resources expecting to make its first shipment this month. Iron Valley, which is expected to produce at an average grade of 58.5pc Fe, will replace Mineral Resources' Phil's Creek, Spinifex Ridge and Poondano mines to improve efficiencies. Mining ceased at Phil's Creek and Spinifex Ridge last month.
Mineral Resources produced 3.4mn wet metric tonnes (wmt) of iron ore during July-September, which was up 12pc on April-June. It shipped 2.69mn wmt, down from 2.86mn t in April-June. Mineral Resources has stockpiled 500,000t of ore at Port Hedland to allow for flooding during the wet season that could disrupt road transport from Iron Valley. The wet season in the Pilbara runs from November until April. Australia's Bureau of Meteorology is predicting a drier wet season than average this year with fewer tropical cyclones.
Mineral Resources produced 2mn wmt of iron ore from its Pilbara operations and 1.4mn wmt from its 58.6pc Fe Carina mine in WA's Yilgarn region. It is continuing to apply for environmental approvals to supplement and extend the life of Carina, with it winning clearance during the past quarter for one of the three satellite mines that Mineral Resources proposes developing.
