Shell plans to launch in Saudi Arabia next year an engine oil made using base oils from its Pearl gas-to-liquids (GTL) venture in Qatar.
The move follows the launch of the Shell Helix PurePlus engine oil in more than 95 markets since the end of late last year, including some markets in Europe, and markets in Mideast Gulf like the UAE, Oman, Kuwait and Egypt.
The 140,000 b/d Pearl GTL joint venture between Shell and Qatar Petroleum made its first commercial shipment of base oils in 2011. The plant has the capacity to produce 30,000 b/d of base oils when fully operational.
The US market has imported a growing volume of base oil shipments from Qatar this year. But German base oil imports from Qatar by contrast have fallen sharply.
