Switzerland-based technology company Logitech has increased the amount of recycled plastic used in its products to 11,000 metric tonnes (t) per year.
Recycled high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) and recycled ABS make up the majority of Logitech's usage of post-consumer resin (PCR), with some usage of recycled polycarbonate (PC).
"Recycled plastic is now used at scale across Logitech," the company said. "Post-consumer recycled plastics are now implemented across 58pc of our products."
Logitech estimated its usage of recycled plastic has reduced the company's carbon dioxide output by 27,000t to date. In 2022, materials with recycled content made up 22pc of its products and packaging by weight.
One of the most technically challenging aspects of integrating further recycled content into its products was matching the performance of virgin resin with recycled resin, Logitech said. By integrating varying percentages of PCR with virgin resin, the company was able to achieve a palette of 30 colors, an impressive feat when the vast majority of recycled resin is sold in only three colors.
"The percentage of recycled plastic in each product varies depending on the type, color, and material make-up of the product and ranges from 75pc PCR content to 20pc for technically complex lighter-color products," Logitech told Argus. "The design goal is to maximize the percentage of recycled content in each product while ensuring high aesthetic appeal and durability tests are met."
Logitech said that use of PCR in plastic packaging was currently not a priority at the company, as they are reducing their single-use plastic usage by adopting paper and cardboard packaging.
The company's usage of recycled plastic extends to its subsidiaries, such as speaker company Ultimate Ears, which said it is making speakers from 100pc recycled polyester fiber and 59pc recycled plastic last week.
